Each season offers an array of beautiful fresh produce; this season is one of my favorites. As the weather changes across the world so does the produce that is available. Since Summer is almost upon us, this means that a great variety of colorful produce is going to start showing up at your local super markets; making this the perfect time to start experimenting with new recipes & to incorporate more seasonal fruits and vegetables into them.
Health experts often suggest that people should eat “seasonally,” or include foods in your meals that are grown at the same time of the year that you eat them. But why is this? Eating seasonally is important, because it carries benefits to your health, the environment, and your wallet. Let’s get into the details:
Health: Because you’re consuming local & seasonally, the fruits & veggies taste better & are fresher with a higher nutritional value. Out of season produce may come from overseas & you can’t be sure what their regulations for pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are. Meanwhile, when consuming in-season produce you’re getting fruits & vegetables that haven’t had time to lose their flavor or their health benefits by sitting in a shipping container from across the ocean.
Environment: Eating seasonal produce reduces the demand for out of season produce which means less transportation, less refrigeration & less irradiation of produce. All of this, while supporting local farmers and businesses in your community.
Saving Money: Perhaps the biggest tangible benefit of eating seasonally is that you’ll save money on food. When you buy what’s in season, you buy food that’s at the peak of its supply; the abundance of the produce makes it less expensive.
So, what’s in season? Here’s the list:
