This delicious Vegan Matcha Affogato shows that simple desserts are sometimes the best desserts. But what is affogato?

Affogato is a traditional Italian dessert that means “to drown”. Traditionally, it’s a shot of bitter espresso coffee poured over vanilla ice cream, quite literally drowning the ice cream in coffee. The result is a magical combination of cold ice cream melting slightly into the coffee, creating a new way to experience your daily caffeine fix.

But you already know that here, we’re all about twists. So we’re making it a Matcha Affogato

The making of: Vegan Matcha Affogato

This recipe is one of the most straightforward. You’ll only need matcha, water, and vegan vanilla bean ice cream. The first step is to make the matcha shot with matcha and hot water. Whisk together until smooth. Then add 2 scoops of ice cream into a separate glass. When ready to eat, pour matcha over ice cream and enjoy immediately.

For the matcha, I recommend using one that is good enough for daily drinking, like Ceremonial Blend or Culinary Grade. My favorite brand is Matcha Bar’s, a company that provides the freshest and brightest matcha.

As for the vegan ice cream, there are so many dairy-free ice cream choices out there, some good and some terribly bad. Personally, I love the So Delicious cashew-based vanilla ice cream. After so many disappointments (I’m looking at you almond-based ice cream!), I was so happy to have found the cashew-based in my local store.

Of course, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can switch up the vanilla ice cream with other flavored ice creams such as chocolate, coconut, or even a raspberry sorbet, and add your own toppings like toasted nuts for a crunch. But I would rather stick to the classic.

Notes:

  • Keep the matcha from clumping by blending it with a matcha whisk or an electric whisk. This will yield smooth and frothy matcha.
  • Elevate this matcha affogato by using ginger tea instead of plain water to brew your matcha.
